Meredith & Penny
Meredith & Penny

While short in years (currently flirting with the Terrible Twos), Penny more than makes up for her lack of life experience with Purrrsonality and Panache.

Nothing phases this playful puss, who is as equally at home in the front seat of a parked car as she is at  the bottom of an empty shopping bag. Her day is generally comprised of meals, conversations (very audible), more meals, several snoozes, a snack or two and some chasing down the hallway.

On a sunny day she will scale the heights of the flowering magnolia tree in the back garden, while a wet afternoon will see her in and out of the cat door, demanding with a high pitched squeak that she be rubbed down with a dry towel every time.

Yes, she is a contrary creature, not known for her predictable ways. But her love of life, Meredith and the juicy crunchiness of a baby skink are just a few of her singular and significant characteristics. As is her discerning but sizable appetite. Which bodes very well for her new career as fancy feast Food Critic.

Last week’s storm has left magnolia blossoms scattered asunder and whole branches of avocado tree strewn across the back lawn. Suits my mood to a T; I excell at the subterfuge and cunning required to conceal my entire furry mass under a small mound of leaves and petals, in order to leap out and catch unawares passing residents and neighbours. My Spring antics have not gone unnoticed; Ginger Boy from next door has poked his whiskers over the fence on several occassions. I feign indifference to his attentions, which merely prove my long held view that he is sad sack with no style or imagination. He could do with a can or two of Fancy Feast, if you ask me. But NOT MINE! Speaking of FF, last night I slept like a kitten after an exquisite supper of Elegant Medleys Yellowfin Tuna Florentine. I’ve always been a sucker for anything fishy, but this Florentine concoction almost saw me swooning with delirium, so lost was I in the lip smacking symphony of flavours that the tiny tin ( too tiny, in my opinion) proffered. The previous evening I also dined in a similarly satisfying manner, thanks to a delicious repast of Elegant Medleys Wild Salmon Fare. I told you I liked seafood! My whiskers were all a tingle for sometime afterwards as the taste of the ocean-fresh fruits de mer lingered on my pink tongue, and brought back memories of eel fishing in the creek over at Ginger Boy’s place last summer. Bliss!!! I must say this gig as a Fancy Feast Food critic isn’t half bad. Although I could do with less of the Turkey, and the Beef. That stuff’s for farm cats, not the likes of a worldy and refined Sophisticat such as myself. With a pedigree like mine only the very best in taste and texture will do. Fancy Feast, you have been put on notice. More fish. Fishy stuff. Salty fishy stuff. With sauce.

Those people at Fancy Feast must have been reading my diary , because this month’s delivery of Tiny Tins contained more fishy offerings. Not that I’m complaining ! Savoury Salmon Pate for one,was a most welcome addition to the dinner bowl, not that it had time to leave much of an impression such was the quite unnatural compulsion that overwhelmed my natural tendencies to exercise dining decorum, and saw me scoff the lot in 47 seconds flat .(I confess, I even burped afterwards.) Then there was the Grilled Ocean Whitefish and Tuna Feast in Gravy, a delightfully surprising duet with just the right balance between texture and taste. (Texture is important. Chowing down on chunks can prompt healthy primeval flashbacks that manifest in unconscious growling and muttering mid chewing. ) I’m even coming ’round to the likes of Farm Food. Chicken tastes rather moreish when infused with flaked tuna, and I never would have thought I’d be lining up for seconds of turkey, before sampling it a la Florentine. The label said it contained Garden Greens. Ditto the Tender Turkey Tuscany. And rice. RICE! How ridiculous, as if a discerning feline would ever touch the stuff. They must have meant MICE. Really, Fancy Feast – you should know better.

Gravy. Gray-Vee. That was the buzz word around the dinner bowl this month, thanks to the folk at Fancy Feast who continue to insist on supplying me with an endless array of culinary concoctions in a bid to have me rate their fare. My four legged friends and associates are amazed when I share with them my status as Fancy Feast Gold Level Food Critic. Not that they doubt my expertise, or exquisite taste when it comes to gastronomic affairs. Rather, they are agog at the remarkable insights Fancy Feast Head Office have when it comes to what tickles a Feline’s Fancy. Case in point: Gravy. How brilliant are the boffins who dreamt up Salmon and Chicken Feast in Gravy? Or Salmon Feast in Seared Salmon Flavour Gravy? And just in time for Christmas, Sliced Turkey Feast in Gravy? I will be insisting my stocking be stuffed with a few cans of that come December 25th! My only gripe is that the darned portions are too small. Boffins – you are hereby on notice: Bigger servings please, in cans that felines can open. That would be pawsome :-)
